What’s Going On Your Nails
Two trends have exploded through the fashion world this year which have inspired me to be a little more creative with manicures; the first is nail art, which has become hugely popular on both the catwalk and the streets; and the second is the Gatsby effect. The pre-depression jazz era, with its glamorous debauchery, is definitely one of my favourites where fashion is concerned, and as Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Fitzgerald’s classic has bought the decadence and sophistication of the roaring twenties back under the eyes of the fashion gods, I thought I’d try my hand at a Gatsby inspired manicure.
Above is my latest attempt at a 1920s “reverse manicure.” This was a hugely popular style at the time; the nail would be painted, usually in a shade of pink of red, but the half moon at the bottom would be left plain. This is a look I have experimented with a few times now; in this version, I have put a modern twist on the classic style, using a dark purple for the main body of the nail (Maybelline Colour Show Noite De Gal), and painting the half moon in gold (Barry M Foil Effects). This is more of a night time look, but the possibilities are endless with the amount of brightly coloured nail varnishes on sale at the moment. Whilst I am not a huge fan of very OTT nails, I do think this basic style could easily be built upon if you wanted to create a more extravagant look. After all, you can buy more accessories for your nails than you can for you jewellery box; with nail charms, nail stickers, nail beads an nail glitter, the creative possibilities are endless.

I’ve been loving this style of manicure more and more lately. I don’t think I’d like it with no polish in the “moon” though. I NEVER paint my nails, but I’d try this if I did! Yours looks great š
