Lacoste; What’s Going On?

French sports company, Lacoste, was out to prove that it could bring clothes for the action-packed life into the sophisticated, fashion spotlight. Having mined the classic Lacoste archives for inspiration, it was clear by the swirling white sails at the end of the catwalk and the sleek, regatta-style pieces that designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista had made the sport of yacht racing his main focus.

“Techno” fabrics and strong, angular silhouettes propel classic sailing-looks into the modern day, and the geometric patterns and a colour palette that is both cool and vibrant ensure that sportswear has an urban edge.

Silhouettes are left simple, with windbreakers built into the waists of sweatshirts and jackets left to hang loosely down about the models’ legs.

Football jerseys in sheer, weightless fabric and mini dresses add just the slightest hint of sex appeal, whilst never forgetting their sporty roots.

Whilst I’m not a fan of sportswear in general, it cannot be denied that Baptista has managed to bring the brand into the sartorial limelight with credibility, without losing its core values of practicality and comfort; perfect for the modern, sporty urbanite.
