Suno; What’s Going On?

Suno, the brand that (according to their website) “utilizes the local talent of Kenya, India, Peru and New York to create a collection of unique prints, textures and embroideries” has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. Only a few months ago, actress Lupita Nyong’o (definitely one of my favourite style icons of the moment) donned a Suno jumpsuit for the CFDA Fashion Awards; which kind of means you must be doing something right. Erin Beatty and Max Osterweiss, the creative pair behind Suno, are responsible for the slightly offbeat twist on these everyday, practical basics.

The confident prints provide a healthy juxtaposition with the soft, loose silhouettes and casually draped separates. Bold, cheerful and full of a slightly faded, colourful energy, the outfits each have a wonderfully subdued, beach-ready feel.

Square, grid-like patterns and stripes provide a contemporary, neat feel to otherwise unstructured silhouettes.

Abstract floral patterns also make an appearance, folded origami-like in with the graphic prints, or balancing with the regimented, monochromatic striped details.

Whilst I cannot count this collection amongst my favourites (some of the pieces remind me just a little too much of pyjamas), its a solid set of designs, and there are some nice moments in the simple shift dresses, and in the interestingly shaped pieces which combine stark grid patterns with lighter florals. Plus, I can’t argue with Lupita’s taste; I look forward to see what Suno does next.
