Diane von Furstenberg; What’s Going On?
Looking at the photos of Diane von Furstenberg’s spring/summer 2015 show, with its stylish graphic patterns and painterly florals, is like jealously looking through the album of someone who has just got back from Saint-Tropez; the very place which the designer said inspired her this season. “It’s all about Saint-Tropez, about colour and beauty and sun,” she said, “the Côte d’Azur in the fifties—when it was glamorous!”
There is definitely a vintage vibe to these clothes, although it’s vintage for the modern woman. The gingham dresses provide a nice throwback to French icon Brigitte Bardot, whilst little twists such as splashes of colour and floating chiffon bring the look firmly up to date.
Matisse’s influence emerges in the bold, graphic prints of leaves and flowers, whilst the rich blues and yellows conjure up thoughts of hot days and endless skies. Model Naomi Campbell closed the show with a smile, wearing a white, paint-splattered dress, which of course emphasised the influence of fine art upon this collection0
Above all, these are clothes to have fun in, to dance in; sequinned details on dresses added a little extra sparkle, whilst those high-waisted pants and printed shirt oozed effortless cool. Backstage, a sign at the model’s entrance read “Be happy, be sexy, be the woman you want to be! Smile!” Diane’s clearly a very fun-loving woman, and when you’ve got clothes like this, there’s no excuse not to be.
