Missoni; What’s Going On?

Entitled “Catch the Wind,” this season’s collection from Missoni did indeed capture the light and warmth of a summer breeze. Weightless fabrics floated around the models’ bodies and trailed along the catwalk at their feet, and silhouettes were elegantly long and draping; just the thing for a party somewhere under the hot, lazy sun of the Mediterranean.

“It begins in the morning,” Angela Missoni said of the colour palette, which began with pale yet vibrant pastel shades. “It continues through the day, the colors get richer as the sun gets brighter and then fades into the sunset.” It’s a poetic way to describe what happened to those slightly faded buttercream and mint shades, which gradually transformed into deeper pink and scarlet hues. The designer did mention that she had decided to remove from the catwalk the black outfit that would have signified “evening,” but luckily her daughter was there to wear the sweater and silk pants on her behalf.

Floral prints and embroideries bloomed across silky, slightly mannish shirts and flared coats, whilst stripes of delicately graduating colours added to the energy and beauty of shorter smock dresses and maxi dresses alike.

Even Missoni’s trademark knitwear seemed to whisper, teamed as it was with tulle – a new technique for the house, one which was both in keeping with current textural trends, and with the overall aesthetic of this particular collection. “It’s almost a knit lace,” said Missoni, of the latest addition.

Silk coats were tied over long, loose trousers for a casually chic look, and footwear was equally carefree; flat sandals and lace-ups, many of which were rendered in reflective, metallic tones.

Prettily colourful scarves were twisted into models’ hair, adding a slightly exotic feel to the proceedings, whilst classic red lips evoked the glamour of times gone by. This was a truly lovely collection, full of clothes to fill one’s heart with joy, and a longing for warm summer days.
